adherence - how well you take all your doses of your HIV medicine, on time, every day AIDS - acquired immune deficiency syndrome - the latter stages of HIV infection when the immune system is very weak allergic reaction - a response caused by your immune system (sometimes harmful) CD4 cell count - the number of CD4 cells (a kind of white blood cell) in your blood. CD4 cells help your body fight infections, but can also be infected by HIV dose - the amount of drug your doctor prescribed for you to take HIV - human immunodeficiency virus - a virus that weakens the human immune system and causes AIDS hypersensitivity - a sudden, unwanted response (allergic reaction) to a drug by your body's immune system immune system - your body's defense system against infection and certain diseases lactic acidosis - a build-up of lactic acid in the bloodstream that may be harmful to your health (lactic acid is a waste product of your normal body functions) regimen - a combination of medicines prescribed by your doctor to treat a medical condition such as HIV resistance - occurs when the virus changes so that the medicines in your regimen can no longer keep your viral load down. Different HIV medicines may be required to get the virus back under control side effects - unwanted effects like headache, fever, and nausea that may occur when taking medicines undetectable - when a viral load is lower than the test can measure in your blood. This does not mean that the virus is gone viral load - the amount of HIV in the blood (usually measured in "copies per milliliter" or "c/mL") |
